Despite losing Son Heung-Min to a head injury early in the second half, the visitors came back to level in the 54th minute through Clement Lenglet. As they clung on for a point that would have been enough to advance, Pierre-Emile Hojberg scored with the game’s last kick to secure Tottenham’s spot in the knockout stage.

Tottenham advance as Group D champions ahead of Frankfurt, who shocked Sporting in the other game in the group after starting the day on top and then falling out of the top two by halftime. With Hojberg’s late goal, Marseille also misses out on a spot in the Europa League, finishing second last behind Sporting.Marseille had started the night on the back foot, fueled by a tremendous atmosphere inside a rocking Stade Velodrome.

Former Arsenal forward Alexis Sanchez had a pair of early chances, one of which Hugo Lloris saved. Just beyond the half-hour mark, the Tottenham goalkeeper was called into action again, this time save at full stretch from a thunderous effort by Jordan Veretout.Tottenham had already suffered another setback when forward Son was pulled off after sustaining a knock to the face in an aerial clash, leaving the South Korean sensation drowsy and unable to play less than three weeks before the World Cup began.

Marseille’s pressure and crowd clamour increased as the half progressed, with Tottenham forced back on the outside of their own box and desperately clutching on for the half-time whistle.Marseille’s goal came after seven minutes of stoppage time due to Son’s injury. Mbemba stood unmarked at the back post to head Veretout’s corner down and into the net with authority, despite Spurs’ poor defence.

Despite failing to mount any attacking threat in the opening 45 minutes, Tottenham, now requiring a goal to stay in the Champions League, came out with greater aggressive purpose at the start of the second half. They were level within 10 minutes. Spurs took advantage of a set-piece this time, with Lenglet rising highest in the heart of a packed penalty box to head in Ivan Perisic’s exquisite free-kick.

Tottenham were quickly in the lead. Pau Lopez, the goalkeeper for Marseille, could only deflect a dangerous low cross from half-time replacement Emerson Royal straight to Harry Kane, but the usually lethal striker failed to shift his feet in time to fire.

That wasn’t the end of the drama. Spurs’ Hojberg slammed a shot against the crossbar with nine minutes remaining, before former Arsenal defender Sead Kolasinac squandered a golden opportunity to extinguish Spurs’ aspirations by heading wide of the post from directly in front of the goal.
