Hence the backlash was too much for Leeds United to ignore as they decided to release Marcelo Bielsa from his duties as manager. The 4-0 loss against Spurs at the Elland Road was the straight fourth defeat for Bielsa’s men at it acted as a catalyst which resulted in his sacking. In the last four matches, they have conceded 17 goals and have looked very underwhelming. The Whites are currently in the 16th position in the points table as they hover over the relegation zone.
In their return to Premier League after 16 years, Bielsa guided Leeds United to ninth-placed finish and his high pressing style was often lauded by football fans all over the world.
“This has been the toughest decision I have had to make during my tenure at Leeds United, taking into account all the success Marcelo has had at the club,” Leeds chairman Andrea Radrizzani said.
Radrizzani added: “I have to act in the best interest of the club and I believe a change is required now in order to secure our Premier League status. Recent results and performances have not met our expectations.
“We find ourselves in a precarious league position and I feel now is the right time to bring in a new head coach, in order to have an impact in the decisive stage of the season.”
Bielsa is one of the most loved and influential people among the Leeds United fanbase but his team’s performances this season was not satisfactory. Hence the club had to take a tough call and part ways with the Argentine tactician.
Reports suggest that Leeds are looking to announce Bielsa’s replacement in the coming days. RB Leipzig head coach Jesse Marsch is reportedly the favourite to fill up the spot at Leeds. The 48-year-old American tactician has also managed teams like New York Red Bulls and New York Salzburg.
Other options include former Barcelona and Athletic Bilbao tactician Ernesto Valverde and Huddersfield manager Carlos Corberan.
