In November, United’s owners declared that they were “starting a process to explore strategic alternatives.” The Glazers recruited Raine Group, a US investment bank that assisted Todd Boehly’s group in purchasing Chelsea last year, to manage the process of identifying potential buyers.

The family, who also owns the NFL team Tampa Bay Buccaneers, is rumoured to want £6 billion to sell United, which they took over in 2005 and burdened with debt. They will “consider all strategic alternatives, including new investment into the club, a sale, or other transactions involving the company,” according to the original announcement in November.

The camps of Ratcliffe and Al Thani are anxiously expecting the Glazers’ remarks. The article cites sources who express concern over the Glazers’ lack of public statements during the process. The US billionaires must certify to Ratcliffe and Al Thani that they are absolutely serious about selling the club and are not merely testing the market. There have been worries that the Glazers may drag out the sale process while they wait for other bids to surface. According to the report, the Glazers’ insistence that they refrain from making any direct or indirect criticisms of the Americans during the process has irritated bidders.
