Manchester United defeated Wolverhampton Wanderers at home on Saturday, 2-0, with goals from Anthony Martial and Alejandro Garnacho. This victory put United one step closer to qualifying for the Champions League once again.
United is fourth in the rankings with 66 points, four points ahead of fifth-placed Liverpool with both teams having three games left, with the top four qualifying straight for the group stage of the next season. On 40 points, Wolves are in 13th place.
After a slow start, Brazilian winger Antony missed a clear-cut chance to score at the halfway point, but he quickly made apologies by racing down the right on a swift counterattack and setting the ball up for Martial to score.
On the hour mark, Antony was once more in the midst of the action when Bruno Fernandes backheeled the ball to him on the outside of the box, but the 23-year-old Brazilian’s effort missed the near post by a whisker.
When Fernandes cut in from the left and shot from close range in the 64th minute, Wolves’ rookie custodian Daniel Bentley stopped his attempt, and Jadon Sancho’s identical attempt was also turned away. Fernandes should have made it two at that point.
Garnacho sealed the victory with a long run and shot that glanced against the inside of the right post in stoppage time after being introduced off the bench in the 82nd minute following a lengthy absence due to an ankle injury.
Confirmed Lineups:
Man Utd: De Gea, Wan-Bissaka, Varane, Lindelof, Shaw, Casemiro, Eriksen, Antony, Fernandes, Sancho, Martial
Wolves: Bentley, Semedo, Kilman, Dawson, Toti, Lemina, Neves, Neto, Cunha, Costa
