Manchester City scored four goals in the second half to defeat Tottenham Hotspur 4-2 at the Etihad Stadium on Thursday night in the Premier League. After-half goals from City’s Julian Alvarez, Erling Haaland, and a Riyad Mahrez brace cancelled out efforts from Tottenham’s Dejan Kulusevski and Emerson Royal.
City manager Pep Guardiola termed the game a must-win for his team, which came in second in the Premier League and having lost twice in a row after a 2-1 defeat to Manchester United on Saturday and an exit from the Carabao Cup at the hands of Southampton on Jan. 11.
Guardiola, on the other hand, would be frustrated by the end of a first half that saw City generate many chances via Haaland, only for Kulusevski and Emerson to strike shortly before the break to give Tottenham a 2-0 lead after 45 minutes.

The mood in the City dugout immediately changed, though, as City came storming out of the locker room and drew level with goals from Alvarez and Haaland before the 55-minute mark. Soon after, City seized a deserved lead thanks to some clever work by Mahrez on the right wing, as the Algerian controlled a shifted ball from the left with a nice touch, raced into the area, and past Hugo Lloris at his near post from a tight angle to make it 3-2.
Soon after, Mahrez iced the game by fighting off a defender nibbling at his heels and past Lloris with a delicate chip to achieve the final scoreline. The loss reduced Arsenal’s lead at the top of the league to five points, while Antonio Conte’s struggling Spurs will be left wondering what may have been after falling five points behind fourth-placed Newcastle United for the final Champions League spot.
