The sickness that caused Granit Xhaka to miss Arsenal’s 3-3 tie with Southampton has passed. The only alteration from that game is that he takes Fabio Vieira’s place. Ben White continues to play right back as Rob Holding partners Gabriel at centre back. Leandro Trossard sits on the sidelines while Gabriel Jesus takes the pitch.

Aymeric Laporte sits on the sidelines for Manchester City as Manuel Akanji takes his place. In the absence of Nathan Ake owing to a hamstring injury, Pep Guardiola was forced to make that important choice. After scoring a hat-trick against Sheffield United in the FA Cup semi-final, Riyah Mahrez is benched. Kyle Walker maintains his position from the match.

Within the first seven minutes, De Bruyne gave Pep Guardiola’s team the lead with a side-foot strike from 20 yards that beat Aaron Ramsdale at his near post. Before John Stones headed in De Bruyne’s free kick in first-half stoppage time to give the game a score that more accurately represented City’s strength, Haaland had many opportunities to increase City’s lead.

The trend persisted for the whole of the first half, and the only puzzle was why City did not score more goals to reflect their dominance. Ben White stopped another attempt by De Bruyne, while Ramsdale made two good stops on efforts from Haaland while another of his went narrowly wide of the goal.

Stones was initially given an offside warning when he headed in De Bruyne’s precise pass to the far post while Stones was back in the centre of a more conventional four-man defence with Kyle Walker filling in for the injured Nathan Ake. However, a VAR review revealed the England international was unmistakably played onside, upholding the goal.

In the ninth minute of the second half, De Bruyne added his second and City’s third goals to put the game beyond Arsenal’s reach. Ramsdale once more blocked an attempt from Haaland, but De Bruyne was in better shape and the Norwegian was playing particularly carelessly in front of goal. After an Arsenal turnover, Haaland again set up City’s top scorer, who then guided a low shot through Holding’s legs to fool Ramsdale and put an end to the game, if there ever was one.

After Rob Holding had given Arsenal the paltryest of consolation goals, Haaland at long last scored the goal his performance merited in the dying seconds of extra time. Arsenal still leads City by two points, but City still has two games in hand. In order to win the Premier League for the fifth time in six years, City can now afford to lose one of their next seven games and still claim the championship, even if Arsenal prevails.
