Before their match against Aston Villa, Manchester City supporters unfurled a banner in favour of the attorney the team has retained, Lord Pannick KC, to help them fight their financial accusations from the Premier League. Along with doing so when the Champions League anthem played, they also made a show of defiance against the accusations by booing the Premier League hymn. During the first half of the game, City supporters could be heard chanting, “we’re Man City, we’ll cheat when we want,”

There were a number of placards in the stands that made reference to the Premier League case, one of which was addressed to the attorney who would likely represent the club’s interests before the impartial panel. A banner in the stands read, “Pannick on the streets of London,” and City reportedly hired Blackstone Chambers attorney Lord Pannick KC to head their defence.
After a busy week that saw the club slammed with an unprecedented list of allegations on Monday and submitted to an independent panel, the Premier League winners returned to the field. Pep Guardiola, the club’s manager, defended the team on Friday. City have said there is “irrefutable evidence” to show they have not infringed any laws. The pre-game anthem was jeered at the Etihad Stadium as Manchester City fans followed their manager’s example in another act of defiance against the Premier League.
