Croatia captain Luka Modric REMAINS at Real Madrid, SIGNS new one-year contract

Luka Madrid has decided to stay with Real Madrid for another year. He has signed a new contract extension deal with them.

Luka Modric Transfer: Real Madrid have secured Luka Modric for another year. The club has recently announced that they have extended their contact with Modric for another year till 2024. The Croatian captain was running out of contract this summer. There was a chance that he would leave Los Blancos following his teammate Karim Benzema’s exit a few weeks ago. Similar to Benzema, he was also linked with a move to Saudi Arabia. However, to every Madrid fan’s delight, Modric has decided to stay at the club.

Luka Modric’s contract with Real Madrid was going to expire at the end of June. Since the Croatian captain had not signed a new contract with Los Blancos, many assumed he could be leaving the club this transfer window. However, Real Madrid fans can stop worrying now as the club has secured Modric’s signature. The 37-year-old has agreed to stay at Real Madrid for another year till the end of next season. Madrid have announced the contract extension news on their official website.

They wrote on their website, “Real Madrid and Luka Modric have agreed to extend the player’s contract, which remains linked to the club until June 30 2024.” While this has definitely come as good news to Los Blancos, Modric seems to be content as well. He posted on Twitter, “Home Sweet Home. #Modric2024”. The player has stayed at the club for 11 years now. Next year, when his contract ends with Madrid, he will be 38 years of age. Hence, he could just decide to retire rather than move to another club.

Modric’s teammate Karim Benzema made a move to the Saudi club Al-Ittihad only a few weeks ago. The 35-year-old forward followed his former teammate Cristiano Ronaldo’s path to Saudi. Modric was also rumoured to be headed in that direction. Considering Modric’s age, it would have made sense if he would have chosen a less competitive league away from Europe. Yet, Modric has still been giving amazing performances for his club and country. Hence, he can comfortably spend another year or two in Europe being a key part of Madrid.

He has recently taken the Croatian team to the UEFA Nations League final. They lost the final to the Spanish national team. However, Modric still managed to play two back-to-back matches for 120 minutes at his age. Along with leading his team to a final and showing incredible skills throughout the two matches, Modric remained at the pitch the entire time for both semi-final and final matches. He took Croatia to the World Cup final back in 2018 which ended in a similar fate.

Modric has led the golden-age Croatia team to two runners up position achievements in 2018 World Cup and UEFA Nations League and a third place achievement in 2022 World Cup. It is quite conspicuous that he still has some years of immaculate football left in him. He has also been important to Real Madrid’s Copa Del Rey win last year. Los Blancos did not have a very successful season last year. However, Modric was still a key part of their good days. Hence, the contract extension is definitely good news for Madrid.
