Luis Enrique took over the Spanish national team in 2018, after the World Cup in Russia, and for a brief while in 2019. Previously, his stint was deemed quite successful, reaching the Euros semi-finals, but their dramatic exit on penalties to Morocco in the World Cup Round of 16 meant that the RFEF did not contemplate renewing his contract. The RFEF congratulated the Asturian for his efforts, recognizing that a “new idea” was required to move the Spain side forward. They have not yet announced a successor.

Spain’s poor campaign in Qatar will be viewed as a failure, especially given they won their first group encounter 7-0 against Costa Rica.La Roja were tipped as one of the favourites at the moment after an excellent performance that displayed their exceptional technical quality and agility in attack. That now seems a distant memory after failing to score against Morocco, who are now deserving quarter-finalists. After drawing with Germany and losing 2-1 to Japan in Group E, Spain’s sole win of the tournament came in this one-sided thumping. They qualified in second place.
The Spain side has plenty of space for development with a young lineup. Under-21 coach Luis de la Fuente is set to take over the inexperienced side in an endeavour to overturn the FIFA World CUp results.
