In a statement on Sunday, Capri Global announced the name of their latest sporting venture. The company continues its stronghold in various sports, with this being its fourth franchise. Capri are also owners of the ILT20 franchise Sharjah Warriors, PKL side Bengal Warriors & Kho Kho side Rajasthan Warriors. Lucknow Warriors is the latest addition to their portfolio.

Capri had been in the race for an IPL team but lost out to the CVC Capital and the RPSG group last year. This time around, the investors did not budge and put in a Rs 757 crore bid for the Lucknow team.

WPL 2023 teams and their owners

  • Adani Sportsline Pvt. Ltd – 1289 Crore: Gujarat Giants (Ahmedabad)
  • Indiawin Sports Pvt. Ltd (MI) – 912.99 Crore: Mumbai
  • Royal Challengers Sports Pvt. Ltd (RCB) – 901 Crore: Bangalore
  • JSW GMR Cricket Pvt. Ltd (DC) – 810 Crore: Delhi
  • Capri Global Holdings Pvt. Ltd – 757 Crore: Lucknow Warriors (Lucknow)

He added, “This association with WPL has been strategic in achieving our vision of encouraging Sports and establishing a deeper connection with our stakeholders and customers. Given its history in India, we believe cricket is the most natural way to advance that vision.”

Earlier, Adani Sportline owned the Ahmedabad franchise and named their team name as Gujarat Giants. The company already has a team in the PKL by the same name.  They also own the Gulf Giants in the ILT20.

Reportedly, WPL 2023 Auction will be held in New Delhi. And the five founding franchises will battle it out with paddles during 2nd week of February. Notably, the BCCI is yet to announce the auction and starting date of the much-awaited Season 1 of WPL. But with a tight time frame, many believe WPL to hold its maiden season in March.

Teams will be entitled to select 15–18 players, with a squad size of 18 being the maximum. Additionally, BCCI has authorised 5 foreign players to join the playing XI. However, one of the five must come from an associate nation.
