LPL 2023 Auction: LPL Auction STARTS on June 14, All you Know about Lanka Premier League 2023 Auction

Find out all you need to know about the upcoming Lanka Premier League 2023 auction.

LPL 2023 Auction: Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has confirmed that the Lanka Premier League 2023 Auction will take place on June 14, with over 500 players having registered themselves for the T20 tournament. This will be the fourth edition of the top-tier T20 league, which will kick off on July 31 and conclude on August 22.

For those who don’t know, SLC has decided to model the competition after the Indian Premier League (IPL) this year. The five franchises that will be participating in the auction will have a spending purse of US$ 500,000 each.

Several star players, including the likes of Pakistani captain Babar Azam and former Bangladeshi captain Shakib al Hasan, have already been signed before the auction. These pre-selected players have been selected on a three-year deal basis, with the franchises having the right to retain and release the players after the end of the season based on mutual agreement. In addition to this, franchises will also be allowed to trade players during a designated period. However, the details of how the trade will work haven’t been confirmed by the LPL yet.

LPL 2023 Auction Rules:

As stated earlier, similar to the IPL auction, players who will register themselves in the auction will be divided into two groups: capped and uncapped players.

The base price for capped players will be between $10,000 and $50,000 in $10,000 increments.

Uncapped players will be further divided into three seperate price ranges. Players with equal to or more than 50 First-Class matches can register themselves at a base price of $20,000. Players with a minimum of 25 First-Class matches or 18 T20 franchise league matches (LPL or any other franchise) can register themselves at a base price of $10,000. Players who do not meet any of the above criteria will be able to register themselves for a base price of $5000.

Each of the five franchises will have a squad of 20–24 players, with six mandatory overseas players.

LPL 2023 Auction Bidding Process:

The amount left after the pre-signing of players will be carried to the auction. Only two teams can bid on a player at a time, and a third team can only enter the bidding process if one of the two teams has withdrawn.

Not everything is IPL-esque; however, after the first 70 names have gone under the hammer, an ‘accelerated’ auction process will take place. Under the ‘accelerated’ auction, the five teams will be able to nominate 15–20 players who will go under the hammer; these players can also include unsold players.
