Darwin Nunez’s availability is a major win for Liverpool and enables Jurgen Klopp to select an intact starting lineup for the first time in a while. Stefan Bajcetic, a teenager who helped spur Liverpool’s brief comeback, makes his entire Champions League debut.

Madrid has made its team announcement a little early. Two players are changed by Carlo Ancelotti from Real’s Saturday victory against Osasuna. Fede Valverde switches to midfield as Karim Benzema, who was rested in Pamplona, returns, and Dani Ceballos is dropped. Carvajal, a different Dani C, takes Nacho’s spot at right-back. Toni Kroos, who was scheduled to be out with an illness but joined the team this afternoon, is on the bench.

Tuesday night at Anfield, Real Madrid displayed class in a convincing 5-2 victory against Liverpool in the first leg of their Champions League round-of-16 matchup. Karim Benzema and Vinicius Junior each scored twice. The 14-time winners Madrid scored five consecutive goals after falling down 2-0 to put quarterfinal qualifying on a very definite course in the rematch of last year’s final, which Madrid won.

Darwin Nunez gives Liverpool an early deserving lead. Alexander-superb Arnold’s pass through the Real Madrid midfield was the catalyst for everything. Salah attacks the visitors from the right wing before Bajcetic finishes the move with some calm play. Nunez then superbly flicks the ball past Courtois to send the Anfield crowd into a frenzy as the forward whips in a low cross for Nunez.

Alisson’s mishit pass out of the back rebounded off Vinicius, looped up over the Liverpool keeper, and slid into the net to tie the game before halftime. This was another horrific goalkeeper error. Despite the sluggish start, early goals from Eder Militao and Benzema in the second half gave Madrid a startling 4-2 lead before the hour mark, quieting the Anfield crowd and leaving Jurgen Klopp bewildered on the sidelines.

The France forward picked up a pass from Vinicius, moved to his left past an approaching Alisson, and sent a shot into the upper left corner to cap off a deft Madrid counterattack. Vinicius Jnior’s two goals have tied the scores at this point despite Liverpool’s fast start, which saw them score twice in the first 15 minutes. Nunez’s flick and Salah’s goal after Courtois’ terrible mistake gave Liverpool a startling start, but Vinicius’ two goals tie the score. The Brazilian’s talent was the focus of the first, whilst Alisson’s error was the focus of the second.

Ahead of the second leg at the Santiago Bernabeu on March 15, Real Madrid has all but eliminated Liverpool from the competition after the Reds let five goals in the Champions League for the first time in club history.
