Liverpool Sale: Liverpool Sale U-Turn: In order to attract new funding, Liverpool’s owners Fenway Sports Group (FSG) do not want to sell the team altogether. John Henry, the owner of Liverpool, has spoken out on FSG’s future plans for the Reds and emphasised that the company is not now trying to sell the Premier League team. The Anfield club’s principal owner John W. Henry and chairman Tom Werner declared in November that they were “exploring a sale”. This comes as a surprise following news of Manchester United Takeover. “I know there has been a lot of conversation and quotes about LFC, but I keep to the facts: we merely formalized an ongoing process,” he told the Boston Sports Journal. “Will we be in England forever? No. Are we selling LFC? No. Are talking with investors about LFC? Yes. Will something happen there? I believe so, but it won’t be a sale. Have we sold anything in the past 20+ years?”

The Reds are currently worth at over £3.7 billion, a significant increase from the £300 million that FSG paid to acquire the team in 2010. Yet, despite some alleged interest, there have been no bids or serious discussions about a sale.

Although it was reported that the Qataris were eager to investigate a purchase, they withdrew when it became evident that the Americans would not agree to give up majority control in any deal and instead shifted their attention to purchasing Manchester United. Henry has already revealed Fenway Sports Group’s decision to reverse course in order to retain the six-time Champions League champions.

When the club’s US owners said in November 2022 that they would “consider new shareholders” if it was advantageous to the club, FSG looked to be announcing that a sale was possible. Henry has already made it clear that there is no likelihood of a sale, though he would welcome investment. Henry’s remarks come while offers are being made to buy Manchester United, a rival team. Both Qatari banker Sheikh Jassim Bin Hamad Al Thani and British billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe have made offers. But, the Glazer family might also stay in charge after securing support from an American hedge firm.

And despite recent, consistent success on the field, Liverpool fans who were dissatisfied with FSG’s ownership cheered the announcement of their possible sale last year despite Werner’s cautions. The Reds return to action on Tuesday at Anfield against Real Madrid in a crucial first-leg Champions League matchup.
