That is when Virat Kohli walked to join skipper Sharma. However, it did not take long for Sharma to go back to the pavilion. A good delivery by Jomel Warrican saw India lose their third wicket for just 34 runs in the second session. Vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane did not trouble the scorer much either, as he was uprooted by Shannon Gabriel to end a dominant session for the West Indies. India lost 4 wickets for 61 runs in the second session, and the hosts looked to pocket the third and final session as well.

However, it was Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja who took control of things for India, ending the day 288/4. Jadeja and Kohli added 106 runs for the fifth wicket in the final session, negating the hope of a comeback for the hosts. Kohli added 69 (99) during the partnership, while the left-arm spinner was happy to play second fiddle, scoring 36 (84).
