Lionel Messi: The future of Lionel Messi is the talk of the town. The Argentine legend has had a 2022 to remember after finally winning the FIFA World Cup on his fifth attempt. After leaving FC Barcelona in 2021, he would have spent two seasons with PSG in the summer of 2023. It first seemed as though his renewal with PSG was just a formality, but now it seems more complicated than that. Reports have emerged that if Leo were to go to USA’s Major League Soccer (MLS), all the clubs in the League would pitch in to cover his £900,000 wages to dodge the league’s pay cap. Right after the World Cup, rumors were swirling that Leo had decided to extend his stay in Paris beyond 2023. Even though PSG have failed to go deep into the UCL, which is the trophy they dream of, Messi seemed to have made up his mind to extend. Now, he just has 3 months on his PSG contract and there is no news of an extension around the corner.

Lionel Messi USA bound?

Messi has the option to extend his contract by another year but has yet to trigger the same. Leo has been linked to a number of clubs ranging all the way from Inter Miami in the MLS, Al-Hilal in the Saudi Pro League, and also a return to FC Barcelona is on the cards. A lot of fans have been urging Leo to return to Barcelona for a ‘One Last Dance’ type of comeback.

However, according to Spanish outlet Sport, the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner could be heading stateside. All of the 29 MLS teams have discussed a structure that would work on bringing the legend to the USA.

Every club has agreed to contribute a portion of the forward’s £900,000 weekly wage in the expectation that his participation in the league will have substantial commercial benefits.

Another added benefit that the MLS chiefs see in bringing Leo to the states is the fact that the next World Cup is in USA, Canada, and Mexico in 2026. If Messi is in US until the World Cup, his presence will bring about a lot of eyes and will be helpful in promoting the World Cup around the world.

If he does decide to make the switch, Messi will have the opportunity to choose which club he joins.

But, other reports state that Messi still thinks that Europe is still the destination for him. Leo has been in good form this season, after struggling last season with PSG, as he has scored 18 times and assisted 17 times in 32 appearances this season.
