Lionel Messi: Following Messi’s decision to join Inter Miami, two of his former Barcelona teammates have followed him to the United States. There have been rumours that after reuniting Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba with Lionel Messi, Inter Miami are still chasing Andres Iniesta and Luis Suarez. Reportedly, Suarez also wants the move to happen and is even willing to buy out Gremio’s contract to come to MLS. However, Gremio are blocking the transfer and want the Uruguayan striker to stay at least till the end of the year.

After Inter Miami secured the signing of Jordi Alba, their managing owner Jorge Mas sparked the possibility of Luis Suarez joining the MLS side and reuniting with his former Barcelona teammates. He said, “I don’t know how Luis Suárez can leave Grêmio. But if he does, we are free to talk to Luis and bring him to Inter Miami. That possibility would be there. I consider him a star player, with an incredible career. And we all know he has a personal relationship with Lionel, Busi, and Jordi.”

He added, “We are all in and we will welcome any player with the kind of career that Luis has but we have to know more about his future before doing any move.” Since then, both the Uruguayan striker and Inter Miami seem to have taken steps on their own to make the transfer happen. Apparently, Suarez is so keen on the move that he has agreed to negotiate with his current club Gremio. Apparently, he will even repay everything he has received in wages this year from Gremio.

He is even set to pay extra to buy out the contract he has with the Brazilian club. Apparently, the relationship between him and the club is starting to sour. At one point, Gremio were even ready to agree to let Suarez go as they didn’t want to keep a player who doesn’t want to stay. Gremio coach Renato Gaucho commented on the matter a few days ago saying, “Suarez is now a problem that is in the president’s hands. They are exchanging ideas.”

He added, “As a coach I have to focus on leading the team. It seems like a Mexican soap opera that should end now. Until August 2 I’m quiet, then we’ll see how we continue. Of course, we want Suarez to stay. I can’t vouch for him. I know what he thinks and what the club thinks. For now, he has been talking to the board and the president.” It seems that following talks and considerations, Gremio are reluctant to let go of Suarez whose contract with them ends in December, 2024.

The Brazilian club made it clear that even if they can’t hold on to Suarez for the entirety of the contract, they are still unwilling to let him go before the end of this year. On the other hand, Inter Miami have already bought an extra international slot for £150,000 from San Jose Earthquakes in General Allocation Money.

Each MLS team gets a limited number of foreign player slots. However, MLS teams also get the opportunity to buy extra slots from other teams in exchange for money. Since Inter Miami have already used all of their allotted slots, they have bought another, but it’s hard to say whether it’s for Iniesta or Suarez. Rumours say, they are also close to bringing in 39-year-old Iniesta on a 2-year contract and the slot could go to him.
