Lionel Messi: Since Lionel Messi announced that he was joining Inter Miami, fans were waiting for the dream debut of this generation’s greatest. The Argentine along with his former Barcelona and current Inter Miami teammate, Sergio Busquets made their mark in their debut against Cruz Azul in the Leagues Cup in the best way they know. Scoring with a beautiful curl in injury time, Messi handed Inter Miami a win. After the match, club owner David Beckham said he has become speechless watching their performances.

Inter Miami recently announced that Jordi Alba has also agreed to join his former Barcelona teammates. However, everyone’s focus was on the Leagues Cup match against Cruz Azul. Both Messi and Sergio Busquets were set to make their debut in the match. They not only made their debuts, but they also made their mark in the very first match. Busquets was as sublime as he’s always been. Messi handed them a win when he was asked to take the free-kick Inter Miami received in injury time.
From the spot near the box, Messi took a curling shot trying to shoot it into a tight spot and he succeeded. The ball ended up in the top left corner into the net and the crowd erupted in joy. This included a an ecstatic David Beckham. Later when he was asked, he said, “To be honest, as soon as I saw the free kick given, I thought, ‘This is the way it’s meant to end’. Especially when you’ve got players like Leo and Sergio [Busquets] on the pitch – that’s what they produce.”
He added, “It’s so exciting tonight for our fans. All of these people, that have come down here to see Leo just step on the pitch – let alone just do what he’s done. Honestly Sergio’s performance was incredible. But you know it’s a dream come true for everybody in this stadium to see, and everybody around this country to see Leo step into the MLS and perform. I don’t have many words for that.” His emotions could be seen clearly visible on his face when the camera focused on him after Messi’s goal.

Lionel Messi and Sergio Busquets joined Inter Miami in this transfer window. After winning the World Cup, Messi’s decision to leave Europe and join the MLS was a surprise to everyone. However, it was the most pleasant surprise for the Inter Miami owners Jorge Mas and former England and Manchester United legend David Beckham. Since Messi’s announcement in June, fans have been eagerly waiting for his debut. Sergio Busquets made the moments sweeter when he joined Messi and made their debut together against Cruz Azul.
This was a Leagues Cup match which is held between selected MLS clubs and Mexico’s Liga MX clubs. This means, Busquets and Messi are yet to make their MLS debut. Inter Miami are off to a good start in the Leagues Cup with the help of Messi’s late goal win. Jordi Alba could be making his debut in their next match. Their next match is scheduled against Atlanta United for July 26 in the Leagues Cup. Their next MLS match will be a month later on 21st August against Charlotte FC.
