Roger Federer last played competitive Tennis at the Wimbledon last year but suffered a knee injury soon after and underwent a surgery. He has since been recovering from it and was expected to make his return at the Laver Cup this year. However four days back, the 41-year old announced his retirement by stating that the Laver Cup will be his last competitive tournament. He is now gearing up for his swansong as he is set to play for Team Europe. The Laver Cup this year will be played from 23rd to 25th September 2022.
Roger Federer reached London on Monday and has hit the courts on Tuesday beginning his practice session. Laver Cup’s official Twitter handle has released a video of the Swiss legend practicing alongside World No.6 Stefanos Tsitsipas, who is also part of Team Europe in this year’s edition.
In the video he can be seen playing with Stefanos Tsitsipas, swinging his racquet and playing few forehand and backhand shots. The players were accompanied by Team Europe’s captain Bjorn Borg. Later in the video, the trio was seen taking a selfie and sharing few lighter moments.

The Laver Cup this year will be the first time the ‘Big Four” – Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray – will he seen teaming up together for Team Europe. The team also has World No.2 Casper Ruud alongside Stefanos Tsitsipas. Matteo Berrettini has been named as a reserve player.
It remains to be seen whether Federer is fit enough to play in both the singles and the doubles. It is likely that Federer will feature only in the doubles in this tournament and might partner Rafael Nadal. However Federer’s fitness coach Pierre Paganini recently said in an interview that his participation will be decided at the last minute. Tennis fans however are hoping to see the Swiss legend for one last time in action before he bids farewell to the sport.
