Berrettini and Paul find themselves as the seventh players of each of the teams, predominantly as reserve players. They are available to compete in place of one of their teammates if they are injured or withdraw. Berrettini has had a good year as he reached the semifinals at the Australian Open and quarterfinal at the US Open. He suffered an injury on his right hand that required a surgery and missed the French Open, while he also had to withdraw from Wimbledon after testing positive for Covid-19. He won the Stuttgart Open title and Queen’s Club Championship this year.
Meanwhile, Tommy Paul achieved a career-high ranking of World No.29 this month. He made his maiden main draw appearance at the Wimbledon this year where he reached the fourth round and also played in the main draw at the US Open for the first time and reached the third round. Earlier this year, he also registered victories against top players like No.3 Alexander Zverev at Indian Wells and No.4 Carlos Alcaraz in the second round of the Montreal Masters.
This year’s Laver Cup will be more special as it will be 20-time Grand Slam champion, Roger Federer’s final tournament of his career before he bids farewell to the sport. He will be joined by the other members of the ‘Big Four’ including Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, and Andy Murray that makes it ever more special. All the four players have never played together in the previous editions of the Laver Cup.
