Lasith Malinga named as bowling coach as MI New York unveil star-studded squad for Major League Cricket

Former Mumbai Indians star bowler Lasith Malinga returns to the MI Franchise. The former Sri Lankan pacer has been named as the bowling coach for the franchise's newest team MI New York that is set to compete in the upcoming Major League. MI New York have also unveiled their star-studded squad and the entire coaching staff for the tournament with Kieron Pollard all set to lead the side.

Major League Cricket: Former Mumbai Indians star bowler Lasith Malinga returns to the MI Franchise. The former Sri Lankan pacer has been named as the bowling coach for the franchise’s newest team MI New York that is set to compete in the upcoming Major League. MI New York have also unveiled their star-studded squad and the entire coaching staff for the tournament with Kieron Pollard all set to lead the side.

MI New York announced the signing of 9 international stars and with this the team has completed the roster of 18 players in total. Mumbai Indians legend Kieron Pollard will captain the franchise.

Other experienced players include Afghanistan’s T20 captain Rashid Khan, Former West Indies captain Nicholas Pooran and New Zealand fast bowler Trent Boult and South African pacer Kagiso Rabada. The squad also has current Mumbai Indians players big-hitting Tim David and, pacer Jason Behrendorff and South African youngster Dewald Brevis.

In addition to the players, MI New York have also announced their line-up of coaching staff for the inaugural season. Lasith Malinga, who has picked up 170 IPL wickets, while representing MI during his playing career has been named as the bowling coach.

Former SA & MI player and MI Cape Town General Manager Robin Peterson will be the head coach. JArun Kumar and James Pamment will take charge as the batting and fielding coaches respectively. Both Arun Kumar and Pamment were a part of the coaching team as assistant batting coach and fielding coach at Mumbai Indians.

At the MLC draft held on 19th March 2023, MI New York drafted 9 players – the first two USA-born players in the form of former captain Steven Taylor, all-rounder Nosthush Kenjige, current USA captain Monank Patel along with wicketkeeper Shayan Jahangir and fast bowler Kyle Phillip.

As per the rules of the tournament, Maximum six international players are permitted in the playing XI. Five domestic players will feature in each match and ten domestic players on each roster at all times. The overseas players are direct signings by the franchises were not part of the draft.

MI New York Squad: Kieron Pollard (c), Trent Boult, Rashid Khan, Tim David, Dewald Brevis, David Wiese Kagiso Rabada, Nicholas Pooran, Jason Behrendorff, Steven Taylor, Nosthush Kenjige, Monank Patel, Shayan Jahangir, Kyle Phillip, Hammad Azam, Ehsan Adil, Sarbjeet Ladda, Sandip Ganesh.
