Valencia were previously warned that if fans don’t stop with the insults, their game will be suspended. After the incident last weekend Valencia did receive the punishment of a hefty £45000 fine and they are to close down their Mario Kempes South Stand for their next five home games.
Valencia appealed to change the decision and the Court of Appeals has now reduced the partial stadium closure to three games and the fine to £25000. Valencia have further appealed so that their partial stadium closure doesn’t include their last home game against Espanyol as they are still in danger of being relegated.
Vinicius Jr has suffered racial abuse on a lot of occasions in La Liga this season. As Real Madrid were trailing by 1-0 against Valencia last weekend, the Valencia fans started mocking and showing inappropriate gestures toward Vinicius Jr. Valencia fans were already warned beforehand regarding their behaviour that if they do not change it, then their game will be suspended. The game was even stopped for 9-10 minutes following this abuse as Vinicius Jr identified the people who had been shouting obscene racial things at him.
Near the end of the game, a fight broke out between Real Madrid and Valencia players. Vinicius Jr was seen slapping an arm on Valencia player Hugo Duro’s face. Following that he received a red card and he left the field. However, he took to Twitter after the match where he wrote a message about how La Liga have become reluctant on racial abuse issues on their players. He wrote, “The Championship that once belonged to Ronaldinho, Ronaldo, Cristiano, and Messi today belongs to racists.”
Following the tweet, La Liga president Javier Tebas defended La Liga and started a war of words with the player on social media. However, many players came forward to support Vinicius Jr on social media including his Brazil teammate Neymar Jr, former Brazil ace Ronaldo Nazario, PSG star Kylian Mbappe, and more. Barcelona’s Raphinha showed solidarity by writing a beautiful message on the vest under his Barcelona shirt which read, “As long as the colour of the skin is more important than the brightness of the eyes, there will be war.”
The other side of the vest contained the words, “We are together, Vinicius”. Raphinha took off his Barcelona shirt as he was being substituted in their last match and he received a yellow card for that but the card was later rescinded. Vinicius Jr’s red card from the Valencia match was also rescinded later. Additionally, Valencia also got the punishment of a hefty fine and La Liga also ordered them to partially close their stadium for their next 5 home games. However, it seems La Liga now have reduced the punishment after Valencia’s appeal.
