Nobody could fault Mbappe’s effort. He ensured that the Les Blues had a chance to become only the second team in history to win back-to-back World Cups, but it wasn’t to be. He appeared deflated on the French bench after the game, as if his efforts had been in vain.

While this defeat was heartbreaking, Mbappe is only 24 years old and can still play in the next two or three World Cups for Les Bleus, so his future is not bleak.
