Kamaru Usman Shared Details about how and why he switched from wrestling to MMA

During the conversation, he expressed his admiration for former UFC champion Rashad Evans, who he found to be surprisingly down-to-earth when he started training for wrestling. But the conversation soon turned towards Usman’s own experiences in the world of wrestling, where he had been to India to compete in a tough tournament. Despite working hard, he was making little money, and he would see MMA fighters earning huge bonuses for their performances.

In his words, “I couldn’t believe how cool Rashad Evans was. It blew my mind that a superstar of this magnitude was so down to earth. He talked to me and asked me about how’s wrestling going and I’m just like yeah I’m working hard but making sh*t I ain’t getting paid.”

He added, “You go all the way in India for this tough tournament and you battle a bunch of guys and you might get $2k if you win the tournament. And then I would see the MMA fighters and watch him go out and perform, get fight of the night and get a $75k bonus so I’m like I’m at the wrong sports. So at that point it put something in my mind that I needed to switch my career.” (From 17:00)

This realization made Usman consider switching to MMA, and it proved to be a wise decision. He went on to become one of the most dominant welterweight champions in UFC history, winning the title in 2019 and defending it multiple times.

However, Usman recently lost his belt at UFC 278 to Leon Edwards. He was given the opportunity to earn it back in a rematch at UFC 286 but he was unable to do so, losing once again. Despite this setback, Usman remains one of the best fighters in the world, and he has already proven that he can bounce back from defeat. His story is a testament to the power of hard work and dedication, and it serves as an inspiration to aspiring fighters everywhere.

In conclusion, Kamaru Usman’s appearance on Mike Tyson’s Hotboxin podcast provided some fascinating insights into his fighting experiences, and it showed how he overcame adversity to become one of the best fighters in the world. Despite his recent setback, Usman remains a true champion in every sense of the word, and his story is one that will inspire generations of fighters to come.
