PKL: Telugu Titans weakest team or badly jinxed? Questions remain unanswered

Telugu Titans have made the playoffs of PKL only twice in history -- Season 2 and 4, where they failed to reach the finals on both occasions.

PKL, just like other leagues is highly unpredictable in nature. One year, a team can have a dream run, and in the next, the team can slump to embarrassing defeats. But this is only cyclic. It keeps changing from time to time. Like Mumbai Indians, in IPL, will not always end up winning the title, but other teams will also have their own fair chance to lift the trophy. Similarly, in Pro Kabaddi, last year’s winners Jaipur Pink Panthers might not end up winning this time around, for various reasons.

But one team that is constantly failing to lift the trophy, worse still, failing to win matches, is Telugu Titans. Five matches have passed for the Titans in PKL 10, and they are yet to win a match. This doesn’t come as a surprise, considering they won only one match out of 22, in Season 8, and two from 22 in Season 9. Of course, they finished last in both editions, but what is shocking is their meek submission in the matches.

No Fight Shown

It’s not even the Titans have been managing to put on a great show either, and losing close matches. In the last two editions and this one, there have only been four tied matches in 49 played. In PKL10, they lost to Gujarat Giants 32-38, 28-50 to Patna Pirates, 33-48 to UP Yoddhas, 36-38 to Tamil Thalaivas, and 40-51 to Haryana Steelers. All this, despite having Pawan Sehrawat in their ranks.

Jinxed for Sure

If Pawan Sehrawat, the current India captain who took India to a gold medal in the Asian Games 2023, can’t change their fortunes, then who can? He has only 39 raid points from four matches played, which is certainly a touch low for the level at which he operates.

In the last edition, Rajnish, who was their main raider, got injured early in the tournament, and Titans could never really recover from that blow. On the other hand, there was Tamil Thalaivas, who lost Pawan due to an injury but still won 10 matches, and nearly qualified for the playoffs. So, nothing really can explain their poor performances in the last two editions, and now.

Need to Bring Back Lost Glory

In the initial years, Titans were the most sought-after team, with players like Rahul Chaudhari in their ranks. In Season 2 they finished third, and in fourth, they finished in fourth position. But since then they have lost their mojo. Every effort to resurrect the team has been in vain. But all said and done, they owe a comeback for their loyal fans.
