“DSEG confirms that our client Justin Langer has this morning tendered his resignation as coach of the Australian men’s cricket team. The resignation follows a meeting with Cricket Australia last evening. The resignation is effective immediately,” the statement read.
The decision is followed by Cricket Australia’s day-long meeting regarding head coach Langer’s future in vain on Friday.
- Over the years, there have been complaints about Langer’s intensity owing to his volatile nature the sticking point. Australia players wanted overhaul despite Langer in search of another long-time contract.
- Things began to heat up after Australia lost to India in the home Test series in December-January last year. They also lost the white-ball series to lower-ranked Bangladesh & West Indies.
- In a dramatic turnaround, Australia won their maiden T20 World Cup in UAE and ruthlessly dominated England 4-0 in Ashes.
- Cricket Australia says Justin Langer turned down a short-term contract extension following a ‘thorough review process’.
- CA had offered Langer a reduced contract than his previous deal of 9,00,000 Australian Dollars per year. In its stance, it said they can come up with 18 months deal.
- Justin Langer was unhappy with the deal— a short-term deal. Australia will tour Pakistan, Sri Lanka and India, play T20 World Cup at home and ODI World Cup in the next 1.5 years.
- Justin Langer was due to travel to Pakistan for the upcoming tour in March but has taken a break for the upcoming T20I series against Sri Lanka at home.
- McDonald will play the role of the interim coach in absence of Justin Langer against Sri Lanka in T20Is.
- Langer might have to reapply for the post to stay as Australia head coach and compete with rivals but he stays front-runner for the post.
- According to The Australian, CA is likely to drop the five-candidate list for the top job. Gary Kirsten, David Saker, Jason Gillespie, Ricky Ponting, Trevor Bayliss are contenders for the Australia top post by Fox Sports.
Australia Test captain Pat Cummins had said that Justin Langer’s performance should be evaluated before offering him a new contract.
“We have to run a process, and totally evaluate, and do what we’re always trying to do, improve and optimise the environment,” he said as quoted by Cricket Australia.
“It’s the right process, it’s how you maintain being No.1 in the world,” he added.
