Lyoto Machida had never been submitted in the UFC before his battle with Jones. Because of Jones’ ability to cut open a gash on Machida’s forehead, the first round was hotly contested. In the second round, things were different as the light heavyweight champion successfully defended his title. Machida’s defeat by Jones by submission is still shown on highlight reels today.

UFC 135: Jones vs Jackson (2011)

At UFC 135, Jon “Bones” Jones overcame yet another obstacle. Jones (14-1) defeated Quinton “Rampage” Jackson (32-9) by rear-naked choke at 1:14 of the fourth round to win his first UFC light-heavyweight title defense.

Jones used inside, outside, and straight leg kicks, at one point even appearing to hyperextend Jackson’s knee. He also avoided Jackson’s unique strength by using his reach and clever ground attacks, such as the one that resulted in Jackson’s tapout.

UFC 182: Jones vs Cormier (2015)

The conflict between Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier may be the cruelest in UFC history. Former Olympic wrestler Cormier successfully switched from heavyweight to take on Jones at light heavyweight. There was a lot of tension and intense personal preparation before these two met in the Octagon.

At UFC 182, Jones displayed his versatility by taking down Cormier for the first time in mixed martial arts. He successfully defeated DC by a unanimous vote (49-46, 49-46, 49-46).

UFC 232: Jon Jones vs Alexander Gustafsson 2 (2018)

It has taken five years to get a rematch. Fans of mixed martial arts couldn’t wait to witness Jon Jones and Alexander Gustafsson square off again because their first bout was a historical event. The rematch occurred on December 29, 2018, at UFC 232 in Los Angeles.

But things were very different this time. Jones, en route to a third-round knockout victory, demolished Gustafsson. Jones was re-crowned the UFC light heavyweight title after the win.
