Additionally, Chelsea is attempting to have the loan arrangement contain a buyout option for the unsettled forward. Felix is eager to join the London club and has already informed his teammates that he is transferring to England since his relationship with Atleti coach Diego Simeone has soured to the point that he believes an exit is necessary for his future.

While they look into other options for Felix, Atletico is delaying formalising the loan to Chelsea. In need of offensive reinforcements as the Premier League approaches its midpoint, both Arsenal and Manchester United have not yet agreed to the terms requested by the Spanish club.

For Atletico this season, Felix has displayed moments of brilliance, but both he and the group have had trouble remaining consistent. The Portuguese forward, who has been played across the front line in a number of different formations by head coach Diego Simeone, has five goals and three assists in 20 club appearances this season. On Sunday, Atletico started Felix in a front-two as they fell to league-leading Barcelona 1-0 at home. At the end of 73 minutes, he was replaced.

Chelsea has already been active in the January transfer window by acquiring defender Benoit Badiashile from Monaco and attacker David Datro Fofana from Molde. For Chelsea’s FA Cup third-round match against Manchester City, both were listed as replacements, with Fofana making his debut in the 4-0 loss.

Chelsea has dropped to 10th place in the division despite spending a Premier League-record amount on transfer fees in the summer transfer window and extensively investing on signing coach Graham Potter and numerous assistants from Brighton and Hove Albion. They were ousted from a second domestic cup tournament by Manchester City on Sunday following a 4-0 FA Cup loss, leaving them 10 points out of a Champions League qualifying spot.
