IPL 2023 LIVE Broadcast: JioCinema has trumped Star Sports as digital has overpowered TV as the preferred destination to watch TV as per Data.ai and BARC data. During Indian Premier League 2023, streaming platform JioCinema saw an average daily viewing of 97 million, outpacing TV viewership, which was at 93 million [BARC 2+ | Period: 15th Apr to 5th May].

It’s significant to note that although TV data reflects viewers aged 2+, internet data only includes viewers aged 2–14. The reach would be considerably expanded if the 2+ data were taken into account for digital.

IPL 2023 LIVE Broadcast: Real Numbers behind JioCinema vs Star Sports

In week 6, there has also been a 40% decrease in TV advertising. There were 98 advertisers during the previous IPL season, however there are currently only 59.

On the other hand, there are around 400 advertisers in the digital space.

With a TVR of 4.46 in the current season, TV continues to be at its second-lowest levels in the previous six years in terms of viewing. In 2020, it was 6.4.

In the 18 to 25 age range, 64% of poll respondents preferred watching IPL on their mobile devices. Only 15% of viewers of IPL matches on TV are between the ages of 15 and 21 and 18% are between the ages of 22 and 30.

The number of IPL viewers on linked TV is 55+ million, compared to 29.8 million (without outdoor) for HD TV.

However, the reign of Digital viewership will be challenged in IPL 2024 when JioCinema will lift the ‘Free to View’ Tag and will charge money from the fans for LIVE streaming.

After offering free streaming of the IPL 2023 and the FIFA World Cup 2022, the JioCinema is getting ready to roll out a paywall akin to Disney+Hotstar. However, it’s likely that the JioCinema Subscription plans will be created in a way that keeps their audience intact.

JioCinema Proposed Plans:

  • Daily (2 Devices): ₹29 for 1 Day
  • Gold (2 Devices): ₹299 for 3 months
  • Platinum (4 Devices): ₹599 for 1 year
