The 19-year old beat Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic back-to-back in Madrid, becoming the first-ever player to defeat two of the Big 3 in Tennis in the same tournament on clay. After going past Nadal and Djokovic, Alcaraz defeated Alexander Zverev in Sunday’s final for his tour-leading fourth title of the year.

However, it was at Madrid, Alcaraz suffered the ankle injury. While playing the quarterfinals against Nadal, the teenager twisted his ankle and had to receive treatment on the court with his right ankle heavily strapped. Despite the injury, he showed no signs of discomfort as he went on to win the title in front of his home crowd.

With the Italian Open starting immediately, Alcaraz decided to pull out in order to take a break and recover and return back to full fitness ahead of the French Open this year. The Spaniard was seeded seventh at Italian Open and was placed in the fourth quarter alongside Alexander Zverev.

After his withdrawal, Rome organizers said Alcaraz’s place in the draw would be taken by Finnish player Emil Ruusuvuori. He has received a first-round bye and will open his campaign against Cristian Garin in the second round.

Alcaraz will be chasing his first Grand Slam title at the French Open, which starts in less than two weeks. It remains to be seen whether he would make a return during the Grand Slam or would participate in the Geneva Open, before the Grand Slam event.
