The victory was an especially meaningful one for Adesanya, who was born in Nigeria before moving to New Zealand as a teenager. In recognition of Adesanya’s accomplishment and status as a source of pride for Nigeria, the nation’s High Commissioner to New Zealand, Ambassador Anderson N. Madubike noted Adesanya’s rapid rise in the UFC, winning the middleweight title just one year after debuting with the promotion in 2018 and subsequently defending it five times. Adding to that, the letter stated, “On behalf of the Government and the people of Nigeria, my family, and staff of the Mission, I have the honour to congratulate you on your remarkable achievement on Sunday, 9th April 2023 in Miami, to regain the UFC middleweight title,” Madubike wrote. “It was an amazing achievement befitting the Nigerian spirit and your incredible attitude of never giving up.“
