Israel Adesanya, the current UFC middleweight champion, is preparing for his first title defence in his second reign, but it won’t be against the person he had anticipated.
It is believed like “The Last Stylebender” will next face either Dricus Du Plessis or Robert Whittaker in Sydney next month after ascending to the throne with a stunning knockout of Alex Pereira this past April at UFC 287.

Dricus du Plessis declined the bout, though, due to an injury. Israel Adesanya claims that du Plessis’ retirement was caused by a foot injury.
Adesanya’s title defence against Sean Strickland was then scheduled by the UFC for the UFC 293 pay-per-view. Khamzat Chimaev, a UFC welterweight and middleweight fighter who is undefeated, has also expressed interest in vying for the 185-pound belt during the past few months.
Israel Adesanya was questioned about whether Dricus du Plessis would lose out on the next title shot if Chimaev performs brilliantly against Costa in a video that was uploaded to his FREESTYLEBENDER YouTube channel. In response, Adesanya said:
“Definitely. Again, I do want to fight Dricus. But he has to know he’s not calling the shots here. That’s the thing. I am. So again, a guy who, ‘Oh, my foot is this. My foot’s that.'”

Eugene Bareman, Adesanya’s coach, claimed last week that Du Plessis may have squandered his chance to immediately challenge for the championship and is mistakenly taking his position for granted.
Top-five welterweight Chimaev will fight again in October at UFC 294. He will attempt to defeat former title contender Paulo Costa there in the hopes of entering the 185-pound title fight right away.
Chael Sonnen, a former fighter who is now a commentator, has also lately spoken out against Du Plessis’ situation, arguing that the South African needs Adesanya’s approval if he wants to return from injury and immediately fight for a title.
