ISL Season 8 Injury: Mumbai City FC midfielder Rowllin Borges to miss the remainder of the season due to knee injury

Rowllin Borges knee injury – Rowllin Borges has been one of the most reliable midfielders in the ISL. He brought terrific stability and energy to the midfield last season for the defending champions. He was one of the first names on the team sheet under former head coach Sergio Lobera as they guided the Islanders to the ISL shield followed by the ISL trophy by beating ATK Mohun Bagan last season.

The news of him missing the rest of the season was confirmed by Mumbai City FC as they released a statement stating the same.

“Mumbai City can confirm that vice-captain Rowllin Borges continues to nurse an injury to his knee and will miss the remainder of the 2021-22 season. The 29-year-old midfielder is recovering well and will continue his rehabilitation with the club,” the club’s statement read.

“We wish Rowllin a speedy recovery and hope to see him back on the pitch soon,” it added.

Borges has only featured for fifty-five minutes in total this season and never looked at ease. He struggled with persistent injury problems and was nowhere near the player he is known to be. Former NorthEast United midfielder Lalengmawia has taken up Rowllin Borges’ position in midfielder beside lynchpin Ahmed Jahouh. But the new coach Des Buckingham have felt the absence of Borges especially the skills that he brings to the table.

The India international brings that physicality in the middle and can do the dirty work allowing Jajouh to take completely freedom with the ball. On the other hand, Borges can play the role of a deep-lying playmaker as he is one of the best long passers in the country. He used to take setpieces during his time at NorthEast United so he also has that trait up his sleeve. Also, he brings a lot of experience something that Lalengmawia does not possess. Mumbai City have brought in Odisha FC’s captain Vinit rai as a potential replacement of Borges but he has not performed at his best till now.

Mumbai City started the season with a bang with wins against FC Goa and ATK Mohun Bagan. But then things started going downhill since their 3-0 defeat against Kerala Blasters. Since the defeat against the Yellow Army, Buckingham’s men have gone on a five-game winless streak. They have lost two out of their last three matches and the other game was only a 0-0 draw against bottom-placed SC East Bengal. So Buckingham’s men are going down the table and they need some spark from somewhere to get back to winning ways.
