Chasing 123 to win, Captain Andy Balbirnie anchored the chase with a stunning 46, missing out on his second successive half-century of the series. Paul Stirling departed early, but Lorcan Tucker and George Dockrell chipped in with cameos to the result beyond doubt. Mohammed Nabi was exceptional with the ball to keep the visitors in the game, but the low score meant that Ireland reached the target with six balls to spare.
Earlier, Nabi won the toss and elected to bat first despite having lost the first game failing to defend a 168. The decision turned out to be a nightmare as Ireland struck thrice within the powerplay despite Ibrahim Zadran’s efforts to counterattack. Wickets continued to tumble in the middle overs as Hashmatullah Shahidi held one end and took the game deep.
He was eventually dismissed for 36 and was the lone shining light in their innings as Afghanistan only managed 122 in their 20 overs. For Ireland, Curtis Campher, Josh Little and Gareth Delany struck twice each. Mark Adair also chipped in with a wicket.
