IPL New Broadcast Partner: The mega bidding war for 2023-27 media rights ended with a windfall of cash for the BCCI. But for the first time ever, there will be two separate companies to broadcast and live stream IPL from 2023 onwards. Disney-Star has retained the broadcasting rights for Rs 57.5 Crore a match or 23,575 Cr. Reliance-backed Jio got the digital rights for Rs 50 Crore.   • Package A: Sold to Disney Star for 23,575 Cr
  • Package B: Viacom bagged the package for 20,500 Cr
  • Package C: Viacom got this NON-EXCLUSIVE packages for Rs 3,273 Cr
  • Package D: Overseas TV and Digital Rights are shared by Viacom18 and Times Internet for Rs 1324 crore. Viacom18 won the rights of AUS, SA, UK territories, while Times Internet bagged MENA & US sectors.

FOR A+B Package

  • Bids closed at Rs 44,075 Crore mark ($5.64 Billion)
  • Disney+Star bagged the Broadcasting rights for Rs 57.5 Crore a match or Rs 23,575 Cr.
  • Reliance-backed Viacom18 bagged Package B of Digital Rights for India for 20,500 Crore (50 Cr Per Match).
  • Overall, BCCI will get Rs 107.5 Crore for one match from A+B rights.
  • BCCI will further bag in excess of Rs 1800 Crore for Package C (non-exclusive matches)
  • BCCI’s total earnings currently stand at Rs 45,888 Crore + Sale of Rest of World Territories (Commercials yet to be disclosed)

IPL New Broadcast Partner: No Homecoming for Sony – However, despite speculations were rife on Sony coming back as the official broadcaster of IPL matches, Disney-Star has retained the rights. Disney-Star pipped Sony Pictures Network with a bid of Rs 57.5 Crore per match or Rs 23,575 Cr.

Sony was the official broadcaster for the inaugural season and held the rights for 8 years for Rs 8,200 Cr.

New player in Digital: While last time broadcast and digital were combined and went to Star (now Disney+Hotstar), Reliance-backed Viacom18 has now snatched the rights for Rs 50 crore per match. They also ended Disney-Star’s monopoly in Indian cricket.

IPL Media Rights: How the windfall of cash will benefit players?

  • The salary purse for IPL 2023 is set to be doubled to Rs 180 Crore.
  • That will see players not only get a mega hike in salary but also cross the Rs 20 or even Rs 25 crore mark in upcoming auctions.
  • The prize money is also set to increase for the coming year. The IPL title winner currently gets Rs 20 Crore. It is set to increase a minimum of 25% for IPL 2023.
  • The central contract is also set to be remade. The current highest slab of Rs 7 crore will also see a significant boost in numbers.
  • The players have been pushing for a better contract considering the match load.
  • The likes of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah can expect in excess of Rs 15 crore, making them the highest-paid cricketers.
  • Currently, England players like Joe Root and Ben Stokes have get paid the best salary from a central contract.
  • BCCI is also set to increase hosting fees for state associations for IPL and international matches.
  • The state associations had been pushing for higher rates after the pandemic loss.
  • IPL franchises too will get a huge share from BCCI’s central pool.
