IPL Media Rights: IPL 2023 – As the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) got richer by Rs 48,390 Crore in IPL Media Rights, many questioned what will the board do with that money. BCCI President Sourav Ganguly has an answer for that. The BCCI will spend that money in developing infrastructure for a better fan experience. The revamped NCA will also be amongst them. “We will work on it for sure and develop overall infrastructure for a better fan experience. A lot of new stadiums have come up, and the infrastructure of cricket in this country is huge. We will redo a few stadiums a bit and bring back IPL with completely different extravaganza and fandom next year,” Sourav Ganguly told Sportstar.

IPL Media Rights: Focus on developing infrastructure

  • With a new stadium already being built in Jaipur, a few more cricket stadiums will be developed while the existing stadiums will be developed to suit modern needs.
  • The BCCI has recently put plans in motion for a state-of-the-art National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru.
  • As the existing NCA facility at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium is old and doesn’t cater to the needs, a new facility is being built near the Bengaluru airport in Devanahalli.
  • Furthermore, a new cricket stadium will be built in Kolkata. Ganguly recently met West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee to discuss land for a new stadium.

Back to Home & Away format in IPL 2023: Sourav Ganguly has declared, IPL will go back to home and away format. BCCI secretary Jay Shah had already hinted at reverting to the older format and now Ganguly has confirmed that development.

“It’s a great tournament and it will continue to thrive. But most importantly, the IPL has to go back to a home-and-away format from next year,” Sourav Ganguly told Sportstar.

IPL 2022 league stage was held in a centralised manner in Maharashtra to avoid travelling during Covid-19 pandemic. Only the playoff stage was held in Kolkata and Ahmedabad. But now that the pandemic is nearing its end, the BCCI will revert to the old format.

“The last two years have been affected by COVID and the biggest thing is that despite COVID, we managed to host the tournament and this time, we finished it with great hype in Kolkata and Ahmedabad,” Ganguly said.

With the BCCI also in discussion with the ICC, the IPL is expected to have a longer two-and-a-half-month window. However, it’s not confirmed yet whether IPL 2023 will be played over 74 days. Jay Shah hinted that the 74-day window will come into effect in the next FTP cycle which will come into effect in 2024-31.

Plans for Women’s IPL in motion: Apart from IPL 2023, plans for the inaugural Women IPL are also in motion. The BCCI has already asked the ICC for a separate window for WIPL 2023. A six-team WIPL will be played in 2023 across six venues. However, a window is yet to be confirmed.

As for IPL Media Rights, despite falling TV ratings of IPL 2022, Sourav Ganguly said that the board was always confident of the windfall, especially in digital.

“That’s the way the world is going. We all expected that the digital rights will be big, and we are not at all surprised. This sport is very healthy and there is no doubt about it,” the BCCI chief added.
