IPL Impact Player Rule: IPL 2023 – With the introduction of the Impact Player rule, things have been interesting. The effect of an all-rounder has been less. But to understand the impact of the rule, BCCI is seeking feedback from the franchises and the captains. So far, it has yielded mixed reactions. While Indian players and captains are on board, foreign coaches and captains are taking a wait-and-see approach to the new rule. “We have received a very good reaction so far on the Impact Player rule. It gives the teams flexibility as well gives a sense of anticipation. The opponent team does not know who will come on until the last minute and what sort of planning is to be done. But yes, we only have what 6-7 matches. So, everyone is waiting. Obviously, we do not impose and always welcome feedback. We will take a call as per the feedback,” a senior BCCI official told InsideSport.

Signal to introduce impact player

What is Impact Player rule? – Those who are unaware of what an impact player rule is, here you go. A team can bring in a player at any point to replace a player from the Playing XI. While the Impact Player is usually Indian, teams can bring in a foreign player if the original Playing XI only had three overseas players.

Delhi Capitals captain David Warner did not seem to be a fan of the rule. He said the Impact Player rule could be confusing. India T20 captain Hardik Pandya, in the first game against CSK, refused to even name his players, saying I don’t know.

“It can be quite confusing, maybe stressful at times. But it’s a welcome addition to the tournament. Either it’s a batter more or bowler more,” David Warner said.

Most of the players and captains believe it negates the effect of signing an all-rounder. In past auctions, all-rounders have commanded the highest price. Sam Curran, Cameron Green and Ben Stokes combined were sold for a whopping Rs 52.25 Cr alone. However, with the Impact Rule, a team can start with a batter if they are batting first and then substitute him for a bowler while bowling or vice versa. Hence, the impact of an all-rounder is now completely subdued.

“I think naming the XI after the toss has pretty much negated the impact rule. It’s pretty much now a substitute rule. If you bat first, you swap out a batter and bring on an extra bowler in the second innings and vice versa,” RCB director Mike Hesson told ESPN Cricinfo.

However, India captain Rohit Sharma seemed to be liking the idea despite the presence of all-rounder Cameron Green.

“I like that new rule and new idea in IPL – Impact player and changing teams XI after the toss. I like it,” Rohit Sharma said.
