Although the BCCI has been planning the Women’s IPL for the last few years, the COVID-19 pandemic stalled discussions. But now under pressure from other boards and former and current women players, the BCCI has given the nod for a start to six-team WIPL.
“The full-fledged women’s IPL has to be approved by the AGM. We plan to start it by next year hopefully,” BCCI president Sourav Ganguly told media after IPL GC meeting in Mumbai on Friday.

WIPL from 2023? – The decision to begin Women’s IPL was also commercial as the Women’s T20 Challenge — set to take place during IPL 2022 — has attracted good sponsorships. In the line with that, BCCI will give preference to existing IPL franchises to field a women’s team. As per information available with InsideSport, as many as three IPL franchises have already expressed interest in fielding a women’s team in WIPL.
Furthermore, Cricket West Indies has already announced it will start WCPL (Women’s CPL) from next year while Pakistan Cricket Board has also given nod to Women’s PSL to start from next year.
This year, the Women’s T20 Challenge will return after a two-year break. The three-team tournament will be held in Pune.
