From then on, over the years, players like Chris Morris, Pat Cummins, Ben Stokes, Yuvraj have all had the privelege to draw the highest salaries from the IPL. With 590 players all set to go under the hammer this year, InsideSport takes a look at the most expensive players in every edition of the tournament.
MS DhoniIPL 2008: MS Dhoni – 1.5 million
The former Indian captain was the most expensive player in the inaugural edition of the IPL. Before the auction, Dhoni was just appointed as the captain of India for the T20 World Cup and he led the team to victory in the tournament. His captaincy credentials combined with his batting and keeping abilities, made him the most sought-after player in the auction. There was an intense bidding war and finally CSK managed to buy him for 1.5 million dollars.
Andrew FlintoffIPL 2009: Kevin Pietersen & Andrew Flintoff – 1.55 million
With the inaugural edition, turning out to be a big success, the next edition of the IPL attracted more players towards the IPL. The tournament also went international as the second edition was hosted in South Africa. During the second year of the auction, Royal Challengers Bangalore splurged 1.55 million to buy swashbuckling batsman Kevin Pietersen. However Kevin Pietersen was not the only million-dollar buy as Chennai Super Kings doled out the exact amount to buy England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff.
Kieron PollardIPL 2010: Kieron Pollard & Shane Bond – 750,000
The auction for the 2010 edition saw two cricketers who were at the different stages of their career becoming the expensive buys. West Indies all-rounder Kieron Pollard who showcased his exceptional hitting prowess with the bat was the most wanted player as teams engaged in an intense battle to fetch him. On the other hand, there was Shane Bond, who was in the twilight of his career who attracted a lot of franchises. In the end both the players were bought using a tie-breaker rule. While Pollard went to Mumbai Indians, Shane Bond was bought by Kolkata Knight Riders.
Gautam GambhirIPL 2011- Gautam Gambhir – 2.4 million
The 2011 IPL Auction was the second mega auction and Gambhir triggered an intense bidding war. Gambhir was in a terrific form and just a month before the auction he had a great 2011 World Cup. Kolkata Knight Riders, which were desperately looking for a captain finally managed to get him at 2.4 million. He was soon appointed as a captain of the franchise and he lead the team to two titles.
Ravindra JadejaIPL 2012 – Ravindra Jadeja – 2 million
Ravindra Jadeja, who was making waves in the domestic circuit and for the Indian cricket team as an all-rounder was the most sought-after player in the 2012 auction. After a tough battle, CSK managed to snap him for 2 million. Ever since then, Jadeja has been an integral part of CSK. Ahead of the 2022 auction, he was retained for the maximum possible sum of INR 16 crore.
Glenn MaxwellIPL 2013 – Glenn Maxwell – 1 million
Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell became a hosuehold name in India after he became the player to get the maximum amount as he was snapped up by Mumbai Indians for 1 million. Maxwell impressed the teams due to his big-hitting ability. However his stay in Mumbai Indians didn’t last long as he was released by the team in the next auction.
Yuvraj SinghIPL 2014- Yuvraj Singh – 14 crores
After a host of foreign players, the 2014 auction saw an Indian becoming the most expensive buy at the auctions. It was none other than star all-rounder Yuvraj Singh, who made a stunning comeback to cricket after battling cancer. With lot of teams showing interest on him, after a big battle between the teams, he was finally bagged by Royal Challengers Bangalore for 14 crores.
IPL 2015- Yuvraj Singh – 16 crores
Yuvraj’s stay with RCB wasn’t fruitful as he was released by the franchise ahead of next year’s auction. However, Yuvraj still had the demand and he broke his own record to become IPL’s most expensive player. He was picked up by Delhi Daredevils for a whopping 16 crores. But like the previous year, the all-rounder played only for one-year and before he was released back into the auction next year.
Shane WatsonIPL 2016 – Shane Watson – 9.5 crores
In the 2016 auction, RCB broke the bank for star all-rounder Shane Watson who came into the auction after his franchise Rajasthan Royals was banned for two years. It was Watson’s second appearance in the auction and he attracted heavy bids from many teams before RCB bought him for 9.5 crores. RCB reached the finals that year but Wtason’s form was not upto the mark and he was released from the team next year.
Ben StokesIPL 2017 – Ben Stokes – 14.5 Crores
England all-rounder Ben Stokes registered for the IPL auction for the first-time in his career in 2017. Being one of the best-all rounders in the world helped Stokes as he attracted heavy bids. Rising Pune Supergiant went after the player and finally managed to fetch him for 14.5 crores.
IPL 2018- Ben Stokes – 12.5 Crores
Ben Stokes was once again the centre of attraction in the next year’s auction. Rajasthan Royals which came back into IPL after their ban went after the all-rounder and finally managed to get him for 12.5 crores. Their association continued until last year. For this year’s IPL auction Stokes didn’t even register his name.
Varun ChakravarthyIPL 2019 – Varun Chakravarthy & Jaydev Unadkat – 8.4 crores
Varun Chakravarthy, a mystery spinner from Chennai managed to become a crorepathi as he was picked up by Kings XI Punjab for 8.4 crores. Chakravarthy attracted eyeballs as he shone brightly in Tamilnadu’s local T20 tournament TNPL, where he helped his team win the title with his exceptional bowling. He bamboozled batsmen with his variations and this quality of his earned him a whopping 8.4 crores. Jaydev Unadkat too was a surprise pick for 8.4 crores as it was Rajasthan Royals which paid the amount to secure his services after releasing him into the auction.
Pat CumminsIPL 2020 – Pat Cummins – 15.5 crore
Australian pacer Pat Cummins created record by becoming the most expensive player in the history of the IPL auction as Kolkata Knight Riders successfully bought him for 15.5 crores. Being a bowler who can clock good pace as well as pick up wickets, there was an intense bidding battle between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Kolkata Knight Riders and in the end KKR won the battle. In the last two seasons, Cummins has blown hot and cold in this competition, picking up 21 wickets in as many matches. He has registered for the IPL 2022 auction and bidding for him will start INR 2 crore.
Chris MorrisIPL 2021 – Chris Morris – 16.25 crores
In the next year, Chris Morris broke the record set by Pat Cummins as he became IPL’s most expensive buy in the auctions. Being an all-rounder who can finish games, pick crucial wickets and also an exceptional fielder Morris was wanted by many teams and Rajasthan Royals had to shell out INR 16.25 crore for him. He however failed to justify his price tag as he scored only 67 runs, and while he did pick up 15 wickets, he was expensive with the ball. On 11th January, 2022, Morris announced his retirement from all forms of the game, including the IPL.
