IPL 2023 Title Sponsorship: After Vivo, MPL and Byju’s, BCCI is set for another blow in the commercial market. Tata Group which on Tuesday came on board as the title sponsor of WPL 2023 is looking to exit IPL title sponsorship when the contract ends after this season. While a final decision on this is yet to be taken, Tata has already informally informed BCCI about their decision. A final call is expected after IPL. However, a senior BCCI official said that Tata Group has not informed the board about their decision officially.

“Yes, we have been made aware that Tata could exit the deal once the current contract gets over. But it will only be an end of contract and we have to call in a fresh tender. They are well on board for now and that is why they have signed up as the WPL sponsor. There is a lot of big companies who want to sponsor IPL,” a senior BCCI official told InsideSport.

WPL 2023: After IPL, Tata Group bags WPL title rights for five years, TATA WPL 2023 to kick off from March 4 – Check details

Tata came on board as the IPL title sponsor last season, taking over the rights from Chinese mobile manufacturer Vivo. However, Tata’s current deal ends with IPL 2023 and the Indian giant isn’t looking to continue.

Vivo inked a five-year deal with BCCI in 2018 for Rs 440 Cr each season. However, after temporarily passing the rights to Dream11 in 2010, it came back as the sponsor in 2021. But the company finally exited last year. Tata took over for an undisclosed fee.

But with market slowdown and an impending global recession, Tata Group is not looking to renew the IPL title sponsorship. BCCI will call in a tender around December 2023.

Past IPL Title Sponsors:

  • DLF: 2008-12
  • Pepsi: 2013-15
  • Vivo: 2016-19
  • Dream11: 2020
  • Vivo: 2021
  • Tata: 2022-23

No impact on WPL deal: However, Tata’s decision not to bid for IPL title sponsorship won’t impact their WPL deal. Tata signed a five-year deal with BCCI for Women’s Premier League sponsorship.

“Both are separate entities. Even if Tata doesn’t want to come on board next season, there will be no impact on WPL. We have a pretty solid contract with Tata for WPL and they are very happy to be associated with it,” the senior BCCI official told InsideSport.

The BCCI invited bids for the title rights on February 9, just days before the inaugural auction. However, there wasn’t much interest in picking up WPL title sponsorships for an exorbitant amount. It was Tata who came on board. The title sponsorship and a mega broadcast deal with Viacom18 already makes WPL one of the biggest franchise T20 leagues in the world.

Tata Motors and Tata financial services will be the products leveraged. Tata Motors has been a constant in the IPL in recent seasons, with the Super Striker Award, with their cars – Tata Nexon, Tata Harrier and Tata Punch all being up for grabs.

While the value of the deal is still under wraps,  BCCI have hit the jackpot with the WPL. The Indian cricket board sold five teams for a combined 4670 crore, before 951 crore deal with Viacom18.

The inaugural season of the Women’s Premier League will kick off on March 4. The 22-game season will be played across two venues – DY Patil Stadium and the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai. The final will be played on March 26, 5 days before IPL 2023.
