Kolkata Knight Riders have acquired bowling all-rounder Shardul Thakur a day before the IPL retention deadline closes. Thakur, who is currently in NewZealand as part of India’s ODI squad, was traded to KKR by Delhi Capitals in an all-cash deal. The Mumbai-born pacer played just a solitary season for Delhi, making a minimal impact after being purchased for a whopping Rs 10.75 Cr.

The Capitals had put up Thakur for trade with his former teams Chennai Super Kings, Punjab Kings and defending champions Gujarat Titans all looking to pursue a deal. Ultimately, it was the two-time champions who got Delhi to budge. He is their third purchase of the trade window, having signed Lockie Ferguson and Rahmanullah Gurbaz from Gujarat Titans.

Kolkata Knight Riders struggled last season under new captain Shreyas Iyer, with their bowling taking the bulk of the criticism. The franchise have tried to plug the gap with the signings of Lockie Ferguson and Thakur, both bringing their wealth of experience and variety to the set-up.

KKR will also see a number of exits with Pat Cummins, and Sam Billings having opted out of the upcoming season. With Indian pacers who can bat being a rare commodity, the two-time champions had no qualms about making the move. In IPL 2021, the 31-year-old was CSK’s leading wicket-taker as they won their fourth title.
