IPL 2023 Retention – IPL 2023 Auction: While all eyes are on T20 World Cup, IPL franchises are busy finalising their retentions list before the Mini-Auction on December 16. The BCCI has set a November 16 deadline for the franchises to send the final list of retained players. Franchises can retain up to 15 players this time and will be forced to release the rest of the 10. For IPL 2022, the squad size was set at a minimum of 18 and a maximum of 25. For IPL 2023 Auction, franchises have a total salary purse of Rs 95 Crore. That means a team will be left with the remaining amount after finalising their retained rosters.
Furthermore, franchises will have the leftover amount from IPL 2022 Auction. For example, Punjab Kings have Rs 3.45 crore in their purse even before finalising the roster. As for the auction, for the first time ever, it could take place outside India as BCCI is positive making it happen in Istambul.
“We are positive about conducting it outside India. IPL is a global brand now and it is only sensible to spread the wing and spread awareness. Istambul is a great holiday destination and has all the amenities to conduct the auction there. Most of the franchises are on board with it. The idea is to take it to different shores like NBA does to raise awareness and build new fanbases. But we are still in talks and a decision will be taken in the next GC meeting,” a senior BCCI official told InsideSport.

IPL 2023 Retention: What are the franchise up to on retentions?
- PBKS: After yet another disappointing season, Punjab Kings will undergo a change, especially with new coaching staff on board. Trevor Bayliss and Brad Haddin will meet with the PBKS management and owners in the coming days to finalise the roster. However, the talks are already ongoing.
- CSK: The most talked-about player in the trade window is Ravindra Jadeja. While the player is not happy with the treatment after removing him as the captain, the franchise is still in the process of mending bridges. However, players like Adam Milne could be released for suitable replacements. Robin Uthappa has already announced his retirement. Hence, CSK will need a top-order batter as well.
- MI: After enduring a terrible campaign, five-time champions have some rebuilding to do. Daniel Sams, Fabian Allen, Basil Thampi, and Ramandeep Singh could all be released. Riley Meredith could stay put but Jaydev Unadkat, Murugan Ashwin may find it difficult to get a place. The good news is that Jofra Archer is back in training and is likely to be available for IPL 2023.
- LSG: KL Rahul-led franchise did everything right last time barring the final. However, it is their middle-order that needs reinforcing with Manish Pandey misfiring. The Karnataka captain is likely to be released.

- RCB has one of the strongest squads in IPL with a great mixture of domestic and overseas stars. But the likes of Siddharth Kaul, Chama Milind and Jason Behrendorff could be on their way out for a seam-bowling all-rounder.
- RR: Despite a strong show, RR fell short last time out. However, with Ben Stokes likely to be available, RR may try to rope him in the auction. For that to happen, RR may let go of Daryl Mitchell, who struggled last time out. Nathan Coulter-Nile is also likely to be on his way out.
- KKR: Another team in focus during the retention phase is KKR. Veterans like Aaron Finch and Ajinkya Rahane are likely to be let go besides Mohammad Nabi. There is also a question mark on Venkatesh Iyer who endured a poor IPL 2022 campaign and was dropped from Team India following that.
- GT: The defending champion have their bases covered. But the likes of Vijay Shankar and Matthew Wade could be let go for new faces. Both players struggled for GT in IPL 2022.
- SRH: After a poor campaign, even captain Kane Williamson’s place is up in the air. However, SRH with a new coaching staff are likely to retain Williamson. But Romario Shepherd, Shreyas Gopal, and R Samarth besides Nicholas Pooran’s place could be in jeopardy.
- DC: As reported, Shardul Thakur is likely to be released by Delhi Capitals. KS Bharat and Mandeep Singh are also on their out. The reserve roster could also be sent to the auction with the likes of Chetan Sakariya.
IPL 2023 Date: As expected, the IPL is expected to start in the last week of March around the 22nd or 23rd. However, a final decision is expected during auctions when the IPL governing council meets.
IPL 2023 Format: Home & Away to Return: As reported by InsideSport earlier, the home and away format will return. It has already been confirmed by BCCI President Sourav Ganguly in his letter to the state associations.
