The reason is to stay in competition with Viacom18 set to disrupt the sports market with free live streaming which is being called the Jio moment of sports broadcasting. Earlier, Viacom18 live telecast and live stream FIFA World Cup 2022 for free on 4K. With that, Star Sports would hope to increase its viewership in rural India.

“In taking select IPL games to FTA, we aim to give an unserved audience cohort the opportunity to sample the top-quality content that Star Sports presently makes available only to its Pay TV subscribers. As income and aspiration levels grow among these FTA viewers, Disney Star expects that many of them will transition to Pay TV. It will help this universe grow further from its current base of 168 million connections (BARC Data),” A senior executive of Star Sports said.

However, despite the noble gesture, the real strategy behind this is to play catch-up with Viacom18. The Reliance-backed broadcaster has already made a splash in the industry, bagging some top rights including FIFA World Cup, Olympics, ATP Tour, NBA, Indian Premier League, and SA20 among others.

Viacom18 has already announced that it will live stream IPL 2023 in 12 languages including Bhojpuri, Tamil, Bengali, Malayalam and Gujarati among others on its JioCinema platform.

Star Sports bagged IPL Broadcasting Rights for a whopping Rs 23,575 crore while Viacom18 bagged the digital rights for 23,758 Cr.
