IPL 2023: ICC FTP 2023-27: The Indian Premier League is about to reign supreme on ICC Future Tours Programme 2023-27. As confirmed by Sourav Ganguly and Jay Shah earlier, IPL is set to get two and half a month official window from IPL 2023 on the FTP calendar as per the final draft. Furthermore, Cricket Australia’s BBL and England’s The Hundred will also get windows, cutting into bilateral cricket. FollowICC Meeting Live UPDATES on InsideSport.IN.

“No final decision has been taken yet. But yes as Secretary Shah previously said IPL 2023 will get extended window from 2023. They (Sourav Ganguly & Jay Shah) are in England and are meeting all stakeholders. When the FTP is finally announced, it will be clear. But yes, we should have it,” a senior BCCI official told InsideSport.IN.

The BCCI has been pushing for an extended window for IPL with its expansion to 10 teams. Despite skepticism from Pakistan, Australia and England, T20 leagues are all set to get a shot in the arm. The IPL being World’s No 1 T20 league will get the lion’s share of the window.

Every year, between the last week of March and the first week of June will be earmarked for IPL. While IPL currently enjoys a 54-day window, Jay Shah confirmed that it will be extended. The BCCI has also set plans to revert to home and away matches which will make it a 94-match affair compared to 74 games in the current format.

“From the next FTP cycle, IPL will have an official two-and-a-half-month window so that all the top international cricketers can participate. We have had discussions with various boards as well as the ICC,” Jay Shah had told PTI.

ICC FTP 2023-27: What does the new draft say?

  • The final draft confirms IPL’s extended window to 74 days.
  • No matches will be scheduled during this period. But cricket boards can schedule bilateral series during this period on their own.
  • But unlike IPL, BBL and The Hundred or other franchise leagues won’t have official ICC window.
  • All other franchise leagues will clash with bilateral series and sometimes with each other.
  • But as per the new FTP, CA will have its own BBL window while ECB will create their own for The Hundred.
  • However, it creates an interesting situation as PSL and IPL are set to clash, at least some part, in 2025.
  • As the Champions Trophy in Pakistan gets over on March 9, PSL can only happen after that.
  • If IPL 2025 is played as per schedule, the closing week of PSL and opening week of IPL will clash, meaning players will have to prioritize.

However, it’s not just IPL and PSL, in fact 5 T20 leagues will clash in the January window every year. Pakistan, South Africa, Bangladesh and UAE have confirmed January as the proposed window for their franchise leagues. All four will clash with Australia’s mega-starrer Big Bash League which will also be played in January window.

T20 Leagues Clash: 5 Leagues to collide post New Year

  • BBL: Big Bash League: December 2022 – January 2023
  • ILT20: International T20 League: January- February 2023
  • BPL: Bangladesh Premier League: January – February 2023
  • CSA T20: CSA T20 League: January – February 2023
  • PSL: Pakistan Super League: February – March 2023

However, time and again PCB said it would oppose BCCI and ICC’s move for a longer window for IPL. However, as things stand, PCB’s opposition won’t have much impact on the FTP.

“Since all the ACC members will be present, there will be discussions on the sidelines and Pakistan is clear that Sri Lanka must host the Asia Cup unless their board decides otherwise. Pakistan’s point of view is clear that it has a long standing relationship with Sri Lankan cricket and both have always supported each other in times of need,” a PCB source told PTI.
