IPL 2023: The global players union has urged BCCI to increase wages for contracted IPL stars. While Ben Stokes, Virat Kohli and several players are on multi-million contracts, the amount is only a fraction of what the teams rake in from the IPL. The overall IPL salaries are just 17% of IPL revenue, while the Premier League offers 71% to its players. Follow Indian Premier League LIVE Updates on Insidesport.IN
FICA, the worldwide body for players, has called for an increase in share revenue paid to the players in the IPL and WPL. The Telegraph reports players receive just 18 per cent of the revenue the team earns during a season. The number is significantly skewed given how Premier League and NFL stars are paid in comparison.
“Players love playing in the IPL but there’s no doubt that if you look at it comparatively, as a percentage of overall revenue that the league generates, overall player payments are well behind other analogous sporting leagues. We look forward to continuing to see the IPL and WPL be successful and to players being paid fairly and proportionately to their contribution to the success of these and other leagues around the world,” Tom Moffat told Telegraph Sport.

All 10 franchises receive a whopping Rs 490 crore from the BCCI for IPL 2023. The Indian Cricket Board themselves are entitled to 50% of revenue. Franchises further earn close to 50 crores from gate receipts, sponsorships and merchandise sales. Overall, a franchise bags more than Rs 500 crore in revenue, of which on 95 crore is set aside for player salaries.
The likes of Ben Stokes, Sam Curran, Ravindra Jadeja, Cameron Green, Virat Kohli and others earn in excess of Rs 15 crore. However, there is a sharp decline with many in the squad bagging Rs 20 lakh only. All salaries are index-linked, meaning players lose 20 per cent of their fee for every game that they miss.
However, while the FICA pushes for a more revenue-sharing model, it is unlikely to happen in the current landscape. FICA is affiliated with players’ unions from England, Australia, SouthAfrica, NewZealand and WestIndies. There is no players’ union in India, and there is no united front for players to push for a higher share of IPL revenue.
