IPL 2023: The 16th edition of the Indian Premier League is underway. While the 10 teams will be competing for the IPL trophy, players will be fighting for individual accolades. One of the accolades is the ‘Orange Cap’. The cap keeps on changing hands during the entire duration of the tournament. It is finally presented to the player with the most runs in the single edition. Ahead of the start of IPL 2023, we take a look at IPL Orange Cap winners over the years. IPL Orange Cap winners
Some of the top cricketers had the chance to wear the Orange Cap. In the last 15 editions of the tournament, only David Warner has won the maximum Orange cap (3). Chris Gayle has won the award twice, while Shaun Marsh is the only uncapped player to date to win the coveted prize for the batsmen in IPL. Below is the list of players to have won the title in every season
2008- Shaun Marsh
Australia’s Shaun Marsh was the first winner of the Orange Cap which was introduced in 28. The southpaw while playing for Kings XI Punjab smashed 616 runs in 11 matches which included 5 half-centuries and 1 century. However, his team lost in the semi-finals of the inaugural season.
2009- Matthew Hayden:
Matthew Hayden was in brilliant form for Chennai Super Kings during the 2009 edition. In 12 matches he scored 572 runs at an impressive strike rate of over 140. While CSK bowed out of the tournament in the semi-final stage, Hayden went on to win the Orange Cap for the highest run-getter of the edition.
2010- Sachin Tendulkar
The Master Blaster won the Orange Cup during the 2010 season while leading the Mumbai Indians team. Tendulkar was the leading run-getter with 618 runs at an average was 47.53. He even smashed 5 half-centuries during the tournament.
IPL 2011 – Chris Gayle
Playing for Royal Challengers Bangalore, Chris Gayle won his maiden Orange Cap by topping the run chart with 608 runs in 12 matches. The Universe Boss smashed 2 centuries and 3 half-centuries. Despite his effort, RCB lost the final to CSK.
IPL 2012 – Chris Gayle
For the second consecutive season, Chris Gayle topped the run chart to win the Orange Cap. The RCB opener bettered his 2011 tally with 733 runs in 15 matches. Gayle smashed 7 half-centuries and one century during the tournament.
IPL 2013 – Michael Hussey
Chris Gayle’s bid for the third consecutive Orange Cap was ended by CSK opener Michael Hussey. The Australian smashed a total of 733 runs from 17 matches at a strike rate of 129.50. Hussey had 6 half-centuries to his name.

IPL 2014– Robin Uthappa
Robin Uthappa was instrumental in Kolkata Knight Riders winning their second IPL trophy in 2014. The former India cricketer accumulated a total of 660 runs to win the Orange Cap. Uthappa smashed 5 half-centuries during the campaign.
IPL 2015 – David Warner
David Warner won his first of the three orange caps with Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2015. The Australian took home the prize after scoring a total of 562 runs in 15 matches. Warner smashed 7 half-centuries during the season.
IPL 2016 – Virat Kohli
During the 2016 edition, Virat Kohli single-handedly took RCB to the final of the IPL and also broke the record in terms of runs. As the skipper of the Royal Challengers Bangalore, he lead the team from the front smashing 973 runs in 16 matches, the most runs ever scored individually in a single season. The season was also a memorable one for Kohli since he notched up 4 centuries and 7 half-centuries during the tournament.
IPL 2017 – David Warner
The 2017 edition was the second time that David Warner won his second Orange Cap while playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad. In 14 matches during the campaign, he smashed 641 runs at an average of 58.27. The Australian also scored four half-centuries and a century during the entire tournament.
IPL 2018 – Kane Williamson
In David Warner’s absence, Kane Williamson took over the captaincy of Sunrisers Hyderabad in the 2018 season. The Kiwi cricketer won the Orange Cup after scoring 735 runs in 17 matches at an average of 52.50. Williamson smashed 8 half-centuries during the season.
IPL 2019 – David Warner
After serving one year ban for the ball-tampering scandal, David Warner made a cracking comeback for the Sunrisers in the 2019 IPL. The Australia star scored 692 runs in 12 matches at an average of 69.20 to clinch the Orange Cap. Warner registered 8 half-centuries during that season.
IPL 2020 – KL Rahul
Punjab Kings failed to make the cut for playoff’s but skipper KL Rahul had a terrific season with the bat. The opener scored a total of 670 runs in 14 appearances to win the Orange Cap. Rahul also smashed 5 fifties and a single century.
IPL 2021 – Ruturaj Gaikawad
Chennai Super Kings won their fourth IPL title with Ruturaj Gaikwad being their standout batter in the 2021 edition. The promising Indian opener won the Orange Cap after accumulating 635 runs in 16 matches. He also smashed four half-centuries during the season.
IPL 2022 – Jos Buttler
Coming into the IPL 2023 season, Jos Buttler will be looking to retain his Orange Cap. In 2022, the England opener piled up a total of 863 runs in 17 matches at an average of 57.53. Buttler scored four centuries as well as four half-centuries during the campaign.
