IPL 2023 Franchises Meeting – BCCI & IPL Franchises at Loggerheads? The Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is on collision course on the issue of PLAYERS WORKLOAD MANAGEMENT. “The BCCI cannot direct a franchise to rest a player unless he is unfit. After all, the players have a contract with the franchises,” a franchise official told the paper on condition of anonymity.

“The franchises also hire physios and masseurs who have worked with national teams earlier and so there’s nothing to panic for the BCCI.”

IPL 2023: IPL Franchises & BCCI at loggerheads on ‘players workload management issue’, board to call for IPL FRANCHISES meeting: Follow LIVE UPDATES

BCCI & IPL Franchises at Loggerheads?ENTIRE ISSUE Explained: At its review meeting with the Team India management on New Year’s Day, the BCCI had said that the National Cricket Academy (NCA) “will work in tandem with the IPL franchises to monitor the targeted Indian players participating in the IPL 2023”.

The statement was made because of tw0 reasons. First India once again flopped at ICC T20 World CUP & Secondly this being ICC ODI World CUP year, BCCI wants to manage workload of the players.

The 50-over World Cup is scheculed in India in October-November & BCCI wants all shortlisted players stay fresh for the MEGA-EVENT.

But the directive of the BCCI seems to have not gone down well with the IPL Franchises.

“There’s nothing official about it. The BCCI hasn’t told us anything. It wouldn’t be proper to make a comment on the basis of media reports,” Kolkata Knight Riders chief executive Venky Mysore told the Telegraph.

When will be the franchise meeting? To cut any kind of confusion, board will now call for the FRANCHISE meet. The meeting will brief the franchises on how the NCA wishes to keep a tab on the players’ fitness.

The board during the review had announced that they will chose pool of 20-25 players whose workload will also be monitored during the IPL 2023.

  • The England and Wales Cricket Board and Cricket Australia have similar arrangements with the IPL franchises.
  • Franchises adhere to it since it is part of the players’ No Objection Certificates.
  • This includes a limit on how many overs a particular player can bowl in a match and during a net session in the IPL.
  • Any fitness related issue has to be directly reported to the Board concerned by the franchise which will then take a call on the player’s participation.

Why board is taking such a step? The recent spate of injuries to the Indian cricketers has pushed the BCCI to take such a step. Jasprit Bumrah, Ravindra Jadeja, Deepak Chahar and various others have got injured before big events. The injuries to key players have hurt India’s ambitions and progress in BIG ICC EVENTS.

Jadeja is expected to return to action during the ensuing Test series against Australia next month. As reported earlier by InsideSport, Jasprit Bumrah is almost ruled out of INDIA vs Australia TEST SERIES. Bumrah has been missing cricket since September.

The board now want to meet franchsies and explain them how the WORKLOAD of the main players need to be managed during the IPL 2023. Will the franchises agree to the BCCI’s DIRECTIVE? The answer or solution to this will not come easy.
