The Taking cue from ICC’s new rule in 2008, the Indian Premier League also adopted the ‘The Super Over’ rule in the inaugural season which was also in 2008. 3) IPL 2018- Introduction of DRS

The Decision Review System (DRS) was first introduced in cricket in 2008. However the technology was only brought in IPL during the 2018 edition. The BCCI took time to introduce the system since it had initially opposed to the DRS, claiming that the system isn’t foolproof. With teams complaining about the lack of technology that could have turned the game at crucial junctures, the board finally gave the green signal to the technology.

4)IPL 2020 -Concussion substitute & no ball rule

Former BCCI president Sourav Ganguly in 2020 introduced the concussion substitute rule keeping players safety in mind. As per the rule, if a bowler, batsman or fielder suffers a concussion then teams can replace that injured player during the game. But, that replacement will have to be approved by the match referee and it should be a like-for-like replacement.

5) IPL 2021: No ‘soft signal’; 3rd umpire to fix ‘short run’, Match duration rule

The IPL 2021 witnessed BCCI updating playing condition by introducing the No ‘soft signal’ rule, match duration rule and short run rule. In the short run rule, the third umpires were given the right to overturn the decision made by the on-field umpires. The rule was brought into play after the short run incident during the Punjab Kings vs Delhi Capitals IPL 2020 match resulted in Punjab team officially filing a complaint on the call.

The ‘No soft signal’ rule was introduced in IPL 2021 after Virat Kohli had commented about the rule creating confusion. The BCCI decided that on-field umpires were no longer allowed to give soft signals when referring to a decision to the third umpire.

The last rule change in IPL 2021 was the Match duration rule. In order to control the match timings the 20th over was included in the 90 minutes slot instead of the earlier rule which stated that the 20th over must start on or before the 90th minute.

6) IPL 2022

The IPL 2022 edition witnessed Multiple new rules being introduced by the Indian Cricket Board to change the playing condition.

Rule No 1: Increase in unsuccessful reviews

When the DRS was first introduced in 2018 teams were allowed to use it only once during the match. However during the 2022 edition the count was increased to two this season to give teams the chance to review crucial decision.

Rule No 2: New batter to take strike after catch dismissals

The Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) tweaked the laws of the game when it came to which player would take the strike when a batsman gets caught. As per the new rule the new batsman would take the strike after a catch dismissal strike regardless of whether the batters had managed to change ends before the catch was taken.

Rule No 3: League standing to decide IPL champions
The rule was onyl made in case a Super Over can’t be played or if multiple Super Overs ended tied. A sper the rule the team who finished higher in the league season will win the final.

The teams have to name four substitutes before the start of the game and any one of them can replace the player from the XI during the match. If a team names four overseas players in their XI, then they can only bring in an Indian as Impact player.

Playing XIs to be decided after toss
