As per The Age, IPL teams have approached Australian cricketers with multi-club deals. The deals are worth AU$ 7.5 million, estimated at around Rs 41 crore. Cameron Green, the highest-paid Australian in IPL 2023, bagged a deal worth Rs 17 Crore. Pat Cummins is believed to earn Rs 15 crore annually from his CA contract. The move could see cricketers pledge their future to T20 cricket with international cricket taking a backseat.
The likes of Kolkata Knight Riders, Chennai Super Kings, Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals have teams in franchise leagues over the world. IPL teams have dominated ownership in CPL, SA20, ILT20 and the new MLC T20. Such moves are already in place with Sunil Narine featuring for all of KKR’s franchises.
“It’s imminent and it’s happening. Very soon players will be asking for non-objection certificates from their clubs because some are already signing all-encompassing contracts with them. The best Australian players who consistently rank as the best in the world for a number of years will earn about US$1.5 million from Australian cricket, playing 12 months of the year to achieve that. The maths don’t work,” Australian player agent Neil Maxwell told The Age.

The Age reports IPL teams targeted near-retirement Australian stars to consider their future. Australia cricketers are unlikely to buy into the same with multiple World Cup commitments over the next 12-24 months. However, the situation could soon change given the financial incentive on offer.
CA and the Australian Cricketers’ Association announced a five-year MoU last week. The new agreement sees up to 24 men’s players eligible to be contracted. The average value of a men’s contract was increased to $951,000 plus match payments. with the figure expected to exceed $1 million in 2027/28. The Total Payment Pool for BBL was also increased from $2 million to $3 million per team.
Nonetheless, the IPL deals remain far superior and the lure could be hard to ignore for many. West Indian cricketers were amongst the first to shun national contracts in favour of T20 franchises. New Zealand cricketers have now followed suit, with Trent Boult, Colin de Grandhomme, and Martin Guptill all opting out of central contracts.
