IPL 2023: CSK Camp IPL 2023: Chennai Super Kings are back to their den in Chepauk Stadium. But as Chennai pitches throw up a different challenge for both batters and bowlers, CSK have decided to conduct a special training camp at Chepauk. InsideSport understands that head coach Stephen Fleming and MS Dhoni have asked for a special camp at the stadium. While the dates are not finalised yet, it is likely to be held late February or March. Follow Indian Premier League 2023 on InsideSport.IN.

It will be special for Chennai Super King because they are coming back to their home ground after 3 long years. With some new faces in the team, CSK want to have a camp to get the players accustomed to Chennai conditions. The camp will begin with domestic players before foreign stars join in according to their international schedule.

“Dates are not fixed but there will be a two-week to a month of camp in Chennai probably in February or early March. MS and Stephen want players to adjust to Chennai conditions. Everyone knows Chennai throws up a different challenge,” a CSK official told InsideSport.

The camp will be focused on various aspects of the game. Particular emphasis is on adapting to the unique challenges presented by the Chepauk pitch. The players will also be put through their paces in the nets, with coaches working on fine-tuning their skills and techniques.

However, dates will be decided after the Ranji Trophy. Some of the domestic players may miss out due to their domestic fixtures and some of the foreign players will join according to their schedules.

CSK Captaincy: However, CSK are keeping their captaincy succession close to the chest. Although Ben Stokes is the frontrunner, CSK have left it to skipper MS Dhoni to choose his successor. Dhoni is expected to bid goodbye to playing career at the end of IPL 2023. However, as far as CSK team management is concerned, one cannot rule out Ruturaj Gaikwad either as he is a long-term option.

“Of course, we are very happy getting Ben Stokes. He is not just a match-winner but also a great leader. It’s MS’s call on who he will name his successor. With foreign players leading in IPL, there is always the problem of combination. Plus, all-rounders are always tricky customers to handle. If Ben doesn’t get a NOC next year, it will be a problem. So, one can never rule out a young Ruturaj,” a CSK official told InsideSport.

Why Ruturaj Gaikwad is an option for CSK?

  • Despite his young age, Ruturaj Gaikwad is CSK’s long-term option.
  • He has already led Maharashtra in the domestic circuit.
  • He is also learning from the great MS Dhoni himself besides the likes of Stephen Fleming, Dwayne Bravo and Faf du Plessis.
  • With time by his side, CSK are keeping a tab on Ruturaj as the future leader.
  • However, Ben Stokes remains the frontrunner with vast experience and natural leadership traits.
  • CSK picked up Stokes for a whopping Rs 16.25 Crore after fending off challenges from LSG, SRH, RR & RCB.
  • But with Ben Stokes, CSK have two problems. One is he is a foreign player and the 2nd is that he is an all-rounder.
  • Ben Stokes is likely to get a conditional NOC on not bowling in every match.
  • Hence, CSK will have to play him as an overseas batter in most games.
  • In case of any injury because of his past history and all-rounder status, CSK will be forced to fall back on another player.
  • Ajinkya Rahane is also another option but he doesn’t have a guaranteed spot in CSK’s Playing XI.
  • With Ruturaj, CSK won’t have all those issues.
