As per a Cricbuzz report, the BCCI has informed the franchises that the newly introduced Impact player rule will apply only to Indian players. While the Indian cricket board is yet to share the complete details of the regulations, it is believed that only Indian players could come in as the 12th player or as an active substitute during a match.

All 10 franchises have been explained that no overseas player can be introduced into the side. The rule is in place to ensure that only four overseas players take part in the game. An overseas-to-overseas swap will not be allowed. However, it is unclear whether a team can bring in a foreign player if they start with three overseas players.

IPL 2023: What is the impact player rule?

  • Each team can name 4 substitutes alongside their playing XI
  • Among those four, one can be called upon to replace any player in the Playing XI
  • The impact player can bowl and bat, unlike a substitute fielder.
  • The change however can only be made before the 14th over of the innings.
  • At no point can franchises exceed their limit of 4-overseas players in the XI.
  • No overseas players will be included as impact subs.

The IPL rule change has left franchises in a lurch as they finalise their plans before the Auction. While teams have welcomed the experiment, many believe it dilutes the role of all-rounders in the team. An impact player could well be a specialist and chip in with his quota of overs. A specialist batsman could also add depth to the line-up. This could have a major impact at the IPL Auction on December 23 in Kochi.

The impact player was a big hit when introduced in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. The Indian cricket board have taken inspiration from football and other sports in crafting the rule. The BBL and Hundred also use similar concepts.
